Can you go inside Heidelberg Castle? What “inside” means

The courtyard is the main event

Start by adjusting the expectation: Heidelberg is a ruin, wrecked by French troops in 1689 and 1693 and finished off by lightning in 1764, and most of what there is to see is open to the sky. The courtyard is where the architecture happens. The Ottheinrichsbau facade of 1556–1559 is one of the finest Renaissance fronts in Germany; the Friedrichsbau of 1601–1607 stands beside it; the Elisabethentor gate of 1615 was built for Elizabeth Stuart, the Winter Queen. From the Altan terrace the old town and the Neckar lie about 80 m below you. None of this needs a guide or a booking — it needs the standard ticket from the Bergbahn valley station and an unhurried hour.

The rule that catches people out: interiors are guided-tour-only

The thing many visitors believe they are buying — a walk through furnished castle rooms — is not in the standard ticket at any price. The Friedrichsbau state rooms open only on a guided interior tour, run in German and English several times a day on a schedule that shifts with the season, and the slots are capped. If furnished rooms are the point of your visit, plan the tour first and build the rest of the day around it. If they are not, you lose less than you fear: I have walked hundreds of visitors through this castle, and the courtyard, the terrace and the barrel are what they talk about afterwards.

The Great Tun, and the dwarf who guarded it

Down in the cellar sits the Großes Fass of 1751, a wine barrel holding about 220,000 litres, with a dance floor built on top of it. Its legend is Perkeo, the court dwarf who supposedly guarded the barrel and drank prodigiously. It is on every ticket, no tour needed, and it is the one stop children reliably enjoy.

The German Pharmacy Museum

Inside the Ottheinrichsbau, and included in the standard ticket, the Deutsches Apotheken-Museum is the sleeper of the visit — the exhibit people walk into out of duty and leave talking about. It opens 10:00–18:00 from April to January and 10:00–17:30 in February and March, inside a castle that opens daily 9:00–18:00 with last admission at 17:30. Seeing it with a guide anyway

A guide cannot open the Friedrichsbau for you, but a good one turns the courtyard from scenery into a story — why the facades do not match, what the French blew up and when, which is covered properly on the history page.
