The baseline visit divides itself fairly naturally: the funicular up from Kornmarkt, a slow circuit of the courtyard facades, the Altan terrace and its view over the old town, the cellar with the Großes Fass, and the German Pharmacy Museum — the stop people always allot too little time to. Ninety minutes does it at a brisk clip; two hours does it properly. All of that sits on the standard ticket from the valley station.
When to add the extra hour
The furnished Friedrichsbau state rooms are guided-tour-only, on a schedule that changes with the season, so the honest arithmetic is: your visit is as long as the courtyard circuit plus however long you wait for the next tour in your language plus the tour itself — call it an hour on top. If interiors matter to you, check the day’s times when you arrive and build the circuit around your slot, not the other way round.
The half-day version
Add the Hortus Palatinus garden terraces — free during daylight hours, and once talked about as an eighth wonder of the world before war stopped the work — plus an unhurried coffee and the walk back down the Burgweg, and the castle becomes a half-day. That is the version I recommend to anyone staying overnight, because it leaves the afternoon for the old town and the evening for the Philosophenweg, which is exactly how the one-day plan is built.
Go up before 10:30. The courtyard rarely sells out, but the midday Bergbahn queue from June to September is real, and a morning start turns the same two hours into a much better two hours.
